The GoodWorx University-Based Life-Skills Retention Program

The GoodWorx Foundation has partnered with New Jersey City University in providing support for the NCAA CHAMPS Life Skills Program. The foundation integrates The goodworx MTC Program’s unique philosophy into a university-based program providing life coaching sessions centered on various life skills seminars. This program is run by goodworx Foundation Chairman and former New Jersey City University student athlete and 1991 graduate, Jeffrey Jordan. "The goal of this program from its inception is based on improving the retention rates and enriching the undergraduate experience here at the University." Reflecting back, I identified a need as a former student athlete with basic life-skills. Time management, Nutrition, Finance, Managing emerging resources, Career Exploration and Development. These are all skills that many undergraduates haven't been exposed to on the High School level. My personal goal is to give these student athletes some perspective and have them take advanatage of as many opportunities as possible. Planning for the next step has to be an integral part of the college experience because before you know it, one of the greatest times of your life is over and its on to the next step. Real life. We want to provide the student athletes with as many tools as possible for them to put in their toolbox.

Approach

After the initial pilot program’s success, The goodworx Foundation and NJCU are focusing their efforts into expanding the program in order to reach over 50% of all student athletes enrolled at the university. Looking forward to a five-year plan, both, goodworx and NJCU, hope to have a profound impact on the lives of the students while enriching the overall undergraduate experience. At this advanced level, seminars focus on career exploration, resume and interviewing skills, and a multitude of other relevant life-skills necessary for the transition from student-athlete to college graduate. A multitude of guest speakers are brought in to present real life, relatable content. "The more exposure we can provide for these student athletes the better." Building their personal and professional network is stressed. This program tries to make an impact from many different angles and over the last 5 years, we have seen progress and success stories.
