Imagine That! Art Appreciation Summer Program Description
Throughout ten weeks, students will be able to experience art in a way they never could have imagined with The goodworx Foundation’s “Imagine That” Art Appreciation Summer Program. The program will consist of five field trips to the following art venues: The Philadelphia Museum of Art (a major museum), The Museum of Modern Art (a modern museum), Grounds for Sculpture (an outdoor sculpture garden), The Chelsea Galleries (a set of galleries in NYC), and a New Jersey City University Gallery (a private university gallery). During these trips, students will be able to explore the art world comprised of pieces of various cultures, time periods and genres. They will travel outside of their everyday environment to cities many of them have never experienced before.
On each trip, students will be given the opportunity to tour the different exhibits and features of each museum or gallery. Then, each student will choose one work of art that they feel connected to or that interests them the most. Their GoodWorx mentors will document or photograph the selected works so that the students may reference them when needed.
In the week following each trip, students will be given twelve hours of studio time. On these designated days, students will meet in room 212, an SUES art room, from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm. Parents and guardians will be responsible for dropping off and picking up their children in a timely fashion. However, if a student is selected to be in the Imagine That! Art Appreciation Summer Program and they do not have transportation to and/or from the school, other arrangements may be made in advance with goodworx staff.
During their studio time, students will create their own interpretation of their favorite work of art viewed the previous week. For example, if a student chooses a painting, they may choose to create their own replica of the painting using only various shades of green, create a sketch, pose their friends and photograph them, or even create a sculpture that represents the original painting. There are no limitations to where their imaginations can take them.
In addition to their studio time, the group will be able to hear from five artists who have followed their passion and established themselves in the art world. These guest speakers will reinforce the importance of following your dreams and will serve as motivators to the students, whether they wish to pursue a career in the art world or elsewhere.
The culmination of the “Imagine That” Art Appreciation Summer Program will be our First Annual Student Art Auction. Students will each choose two works that they have created throughout the course of the program to enter in the auction. They will then host an auction and invite friends, family, and members of the community to bid on their creations. All proceeds will then be invested back into our community’s art programs.
Approach
The "Imagine That" Art Appreciation program was established to provide exposure to various expressions of Art. By blending the exposure of our various art trips with studio time, we provide opportunities for reflection and expression, on a weekly basis.
What's Happing Now!
After the huge success of our first annual Art Gala and Silent Auction, which was held on August 27th, our kids generated $1,002.00 dollars from the auctioning of their work over the course of the 10 week program. In October, Our kids will present the Samsel Upper Elementary School Art Depatment with a check for the total amount raised. Please look forward to event details which will soon be released.
