After School

Description

About the Program

The GWx MTC/SUES After-School Program incorporates The goodworx Foundation’s MTC Program Philosophy which focuses on developing the unique potential of today’s young people, by blending mentoring, life coaching, and academic support. Program seminar content focuses on key topics including (but not limited to) the following:

• Team Building
• Staying Healthy
• Finance
• Self-Esteem
• Leadership
• Awareness
• Community Service
• Cultural Diversity
• Environmental Awareness
• Careers

Students will also have the opportunity to contribute to seminar content material when we present our three “wild” seminars. During these seminars, the students will choose topics that are important to them. We will then research the topics together and the students will have the opportunity to present their research to the group.

Approach

Content

The GWx MTC/SUES After-School Program is comprised of three main portions on a daily basis – Academics, Life-Skills and Recreation. During Academics, students will meet with Team goodworx staff to complete their everyday homework and/or work on projects, reports or other classroom assignments. Students will be given at least one hour to devote to homework, but this portion may be extended based on need. Immediately following Academics, students will transition into Life Skills. Life Skills may be held in the classroom, computer lab, or outdoor depending on the weather. During this time, activities and discussions will be focused on the current seminar, but content is flexible to change. If a guest speaker is scheduled, they will present during this time. The final component, Recreation, depending on the activity may be held in the gymnasium, auxiliary gym, courtyard, playground or classroom. Activities may include but are not limited to sports, arts and crafts, performing arts, board games, etc. Special events such as holiday parties and the end-of-the-year birthday party will be held during this time.

Community Service

Throughout the year, we participate in various community service activities that, in the past, have included a blood drive, organizing drives and donations, and trips to the Ronald McDonald House, Briarwood Care and Rehabilitation Center, Elijah’s Promise, and a food bank. The goodworx Foundation is a nonprofit organization and we provide our services free of charge. Because we believe in and instill in our students the value of community service, all students will hereafter be required to participate in at least (but not limited to) TEN hours of community service throughout the 2010-2011 programmatic year. Five hours must be completed between October and January. Failure to complete five hours of community service within this time frame will result in the child’s expulsion from the program. An additional five hours, regardless of the number of hours recorded between October and January, must be completed between February and May. Failure to complete the additional five hours will result in the child’s exclusion from end of the year activities including, but not limited to The goodworx Birthday Party (last day), The Art and Talent Showcase, the annual End-of-the-Year Appreciation Barbecue, any goodworx summer programs, and all reward summer trips.

Goals

The goal of The GWx MTC/SUES After-School Program is to maximize the development of each student’s full potential, to promote a desire for academics and to convey the importance of academics for future investment, as well as, to provide student with Life skills that will better prepare them for education, social, and corporate world.
